Climate Care

TWO years ago, Eduardo Ferreira was studying the microbiology of cancer cells in São Paulo, Brazil. Today he is in China, helping to counter climate change. He is working for an Oxford-based non-profit company which sells carbon offsets by organizing the distribution of cooking stoves that burn biofuel. Ferreira is one of tens of thousands of scientists from all fields who are joining the fight to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - and in which British organizations like Climate Care, Ferreira’s employer, are among the biggest players.

Nashville talent search

Nashville has embraced reality shows like “Nashville Star,” “Gone Country,” “Can You Duet” and “GAC Star.” Kenny Chesney is looking for opening acts for his Poets & Pirates 2008 Tour. The Big Star Competition is named after his hit “Big Star.” It’s a talent contest seeking bands to open for Chesney when he comes to their hometown.

Toyota Matrix

The new Matrix from Toyota is super cool. We like it in silver, but whatever your color, it’s easier than ever to hit the road. It comes with all the standard bells and whistles, of course!

Cracking down on corruption

Nigeria’s government, police, civil services, and businesses are plagued by extortion, bribery, and other forms of corruption. While many point to a failure of leadership, corruption is largely a byproduct of an economy fueled almost exclusively by petroleum exports. With no vested interest in developing Nigeria’s infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, the wealthy simply profit from oil while the nation falls ever deeper into economic chaos. Recently elected President Obasanjo has vowed to crack down on corruption and bribery.
Wow, his name reminds us of Obama who was just here in Portland! He’s not too keen on corruption either.
